What is meant by COVID-19 variant?

Viruses are constantly evolving, and this can result in the emergence of a new mutation, or strain, of the virus. Usually a variant has no effect on the reactions of a virus. But sometimes they cause them to behave differently.

Changes in the virus that triggers COVID-19 are being tracked by scientists all over the world. Their results help scientists determine whether some COVID variants spread more rapidly than others, how they affect your health, and how effective different vaccines are against them.

How Many Types of COVID Variants Are Out There?

Coronaviruses have been around for a long time. Actually they are a family of big viruses that has existed for a long time. Many of them can cause a wide range of illnesses, from a simple cough to serious respiratory problems.

COVID-19 is caused by a new or novel coronavirus, one of many known to infect humans. It’s most likely been present in animals for a long time. Viruses that infect animals will sometimes infect humans as well. That’s what scientists believe happened in this situation. So, while this virus isn’t new to other living creatures, it is new to humans. After scientists uncovered that it was infecting people in 2019, they termed the virus as a novel coronavirus.

Types of Coronavirus Found in Humans

Scientists have divided Coronaviruses into four subgroups: alpha, beta, gamma, and delta. People can be infected by seven of these viruses:

  • 229E (alpha)
  • NL63 (alpha)
  • OC43 (beta)
  • HKU1 (beta)
  • MERS-CoV, a beta virus that causes Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS)
  • SARS-CoV, a beta virus that causes severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)
  • SARS-CoV-2, causes COVID-19

Coronavirus Variants Found in Brazil, Africa, and U.K.

Experts discovered a new COVID-19 variant in Brazilian travellers to Japan in January 2021. By the end of the month, the variant had made its way to the United States.

This strain of the virus tends to be more infectious than previous strains. It may also be able to infect people who have already been exposed to COVID-19.

Experts discovered gene mutations in COVID-19 cases in southeastern England in late 2020. Other nations, including the United States, have also identified this variant. According to scientists, these mutations could increase the virus’s transmissibility by up to 70%, making it easier to spread. This version has been linked to a higher risk of death in some studies, but the evidence isn’t sufficient.

Other countries where the virus has been discovered include South Africa and Nigeria. While the South African strain tends to spread more quickly than the original virus, it does not appear to cause more serious illness.

Earlier Variants of Coronavirus 

You may have learned that there were several strains of the latest coronavirus earlier in 2020, when the pandemic was still new. Do you believe it? Yeah, it seemed that the answer was yes.

A research in China led to the hypothesis of various strains of the modern coronavirus. They examined 103 samples of the latest coronavirus obtained from people as well as coronaviruses found in animals. It showed that viruses present in humans were not all the same.

There were two forms referred to as “L” and “S” by the researchers. They’re almost identical, with two little changes. The S form seems to have arrived first. The L type, however, was more widespread early in the outbreak.

What to Expect?

The virus that triggers COVID-19 is likely to evolve. New forms can be discovered. It’s hard to predict how those changes in viruses may affect the results. But change is just what these viruses do.
